You don't have to be an executive in a Fortune 500 company to see that the basic architecture of health care is from the late 19th century and that it is undergoing sub-atomic change. But it's a little disheartening to see the vast rush to dominate this by Google, Microsoft, Verizon, et. al. There won't be any Nobel prizes given out for digital radio. And planting a flag doesn't make the North Pole anything but ice.

Google's intent to absolutely dominate RF communication is based on deception: the myth that it is bringing something to market that didn't exist before. Bill Gates didn't invent the PC any more than Steve Jobs invented windowing or the Mouse.

I wonder how much thought Google put into how Android might impact Google Health. There are things they might have done to make Android a more attractive software platform for wireless sensor gateways.

It will also be interesting to see if Google follows Microsoft in offering a platform for integrating medical device connectivity. Healthvault's Connection Center does this. A proposed rule from the FDA, reclassifies what they call Medical Device Data Systems (MDDS) to a Class I medical device. Microsoft expects to have to clear this hurdle, as would Google should they release a similar feature.

It's hard to carve out a piece of the value chain at the point of care without running into the FDA. The point of care is where health care is, you know, actually delivered. It's very hard to have a device at the point of care that avoids meeting the legal definition of a medical device. This will be an ongoing issue for Google, Microsoft, wireless carriers and others.
