Denver, Colorado-based Welltok raised $12 million co-led by Hearst Ventures and Catholic Health Initiatives. The capital tops off a $37 million round for the company, which disclosed the other $25 million in October.
The previous $25 million was led by Bessemer Venture Partners with participation from Emergence Capital Partners, InterWest Partners, New Enterprise Associates (NEA), and Qualcomm Ventures. Welltok's funding for the past year has reached $59 million -- the company’s total disclosed funding now stands at around $72.7 million.
“With the capital raised in 2014, we are in a great position to deliver excellence to our existing and growing client portfolio," Welltok CEO Jeff Margolis said in a statement. "It also enables us to focus on building new capabilities into our groundbreaking Health Optimization Platform."
Welltok has developed an online and mobile platform called CafeWell, which curates health management programs, apps, and tracking devices. CafeWell is only available through employers, health plans, or providers. The platform provides users with a personalized health plan including articles, videos, and condition management programs. CafeWell also encourages patients with rewards after reaching health goals and connects patients with coaches and health experts when they need help.
In March 2014, Welltok announced the acquisition of wellness app maker Mindbloom. Welltok said it would incorporate Mindbloom into the CafeWell Health Optimization Platform. The Mindbloom apps are also still available separately from the CafeWell program.
Other Welltok features include CafeWell Connect, the company's health and fitness data partner program, and CafeWell Concierge.
The latter was developed thanks to an integration with IBM's supercomputer Watson. In November 2013, Welltok announced that it would be one of the first companies to leverage Watson. Welltok incorporated Watson into its app CafeWell Concierge, for users of its existing CafeWell health social network. CafeWell Concierge is available as a separate app on Android and iOS devices.
