Report Uncovers Significant Growth Opportunities for mHealth Apps in the Healthcare Enterprise Market

Cambridge, MA – November 22, 2010 – In its most recent report, mHealth in the Enterprise: Trends, Opportunities & Challenges, industry analyst firm Chilmark Research finds a market on the verge of explosive growth. While today the mHealth market opportunity in healthcare enterprises is less than $100M, the rapid evolution in mobile devices coupled with physician demand and the healthcare enterprise’s need to improve quality and efficiencies will drive the market to $1.7 billion by end of 2014. The report is the first of its kind to focus exclusively on current and future adoption trends for mHealth Apps by healthcare enterprises including forecasted growth for several application areas through 2014.

“Currently, 63% of physicians are using an mHealth App in the enterprise,” says Cora Sharma, lead analyst at Chilmark Research. “However, the majority of these are clinical reference Apps with no tie-in to an enterprise’s healthcare information systems (HIS).” Sharma goes on to state that “Physician adoption of mobile devices, including extremely rapid adoption of touchscreen tablets such as Apple’s iPad, will lead to equally rapid adoption and deployment of mHealth App solutions by these enterprises – not just to help them comply with meaningful use or to satisfy physician demands, but also in an effort to improve operational efficiencies and quality of care delivered.” Continue >>

Niche Market for Smartphones in Healthcare

Published: Wednesday, August 18th, 2010 By Brian Dolan

NEW YORK, NY–(Marketwire – August 17, 2010) – Healthcare is a niche market with growth potential for Smartphones, according to healthcare market research publisher Kalorama Information. The firm cites high rates of physician use of Smartphones and PDAs and available applications among many factors making healthcare ideal for Smartphone sales. In 2009, PDAs and Smartphones for healthcare applications were worth about $2.6 billion combined — according to Kalorama’s recently released report, “Handhelds in Healthcare: The World Market for PDAs, Tablet PCs, Handheld Monitors & Scanners.”

Kalorama notes that the industry is no stranger to portability. Healthcare professionals have been key consumers of beeper and pager devices, and many portable patient record and reference book products have been aimed at physicians. While healthcare is just a fraction of total Smartphone and PDA sales, just about five percent of the total market, Kalorama predicts that healthcare is one of the growth areas — particularly for Smartphones, because of their ability to combine communication with alerts, references and records.
