Roundup of recent digital health moves: Teladoc, CareSync, Jawbone, athenahealth

Teladoc, a video visits company, has hired Stephany Verstraete as its chief marketing officer. Before working at Teladoc, Verstraete worked in marketing for Truveris, as their CMO. She's held past marketing positions at Kraft, Frito Lay, Hostess, Match.com, and Expedia. Teladoc CEO Jason Gorevic said in a statement that Teladoc most valued Verstraete’s experience building brands and working in consumer relationship management.

CareSync, which has developed a care coordination platform, appointed three new team members: Russell Dumas as vice president of clinical operations, David Antle as vice president of client services, and Teri Spencer as vice president of human resources. Dumas previously worked in a number of healthcare companies including Allscripts, Napier Healthcare, Bayer Healthcare, and Allegheny Health Network. Antle, who will oversee CareSync’s client communications, previously served as executive vice president for BobCAD-CAM. And Spencer, previously served as senior talent business partner for GTE Financial credit union and senior vice president of people strategies and resources for CCS Medical.

Intouch Solutions, a pharmaceutical marketing firm that develops apps for pharma companies among other things, hired Chris Shirling as its chief financial officer. Shirling will help Intouch manage their budgeting, create forecasts for the company, and develop financial strategies. 

Doctor On Demand, a video visits company, announced that its Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Pat Basu, has left the company and will be replaced with the company’s medical director, Dr. Ian Tong. Basu worked at Doctor on Demand for almost three years. He joined in June 2013. Before working at Doctor on Demand, Basu was a White House fellow and before that, a physician at Stanford University. The company's new chief medical officer, Dr. Ian Tong, has also worked at Doctor on Demand since June 2013. He previously worked at VA Palo Alto Health Care System and Stanford University School of Medicine.

Athenahealth has hired Prakash Khot as its Chief Technology Officer. The company said Khot’s primary focus will be to developing athenaNet. Khot will also oversee software development, UX design, technology infrastructure, and data analytics for athenahealth. Before joining the company, Khot worked as Chief Technology and Product Officer at Kaseya and the Senior Vice President of Engineering at Salesforce.

American Well has appointed Massachusetts General Hospital President Peter L. Slavin to its board of directors. “Using technology to make health care better, more accessible, timelier and more convenient is essential as we look for ways to advance medical care while making that care more affordable,” Slavin said in a statement. “Tools such as telehealth, virtual visits and mobile apps that help people live healthier lives have fast become important aspects of high-quality medical care.”

Oscar hired Brian West as its president and CFO. Before Oscar, West worked at Nielsen as its chief operating officer and chief financial officer. The company also hired Joel Klein as its Chief Policy and Strategy officer. Klein previously ran the Justice Department’s anti-trust division under Bill Clinton.

Jawbone’s recently hired president, Sameer Samat, has returned to Google. Samat served as a vice president of product management at Google from 2011 to 2015. From June 2015 to earlier this year, he worked at Jawbone as the company’s president. In January, Google confirmed that Samat is now back at Google working in Google Play.

HIMSS’ Personal Connected Health Alliance (PCHA) has hired Patricia (Patty) Mechael as its executive vice president. Before joining HIMSS, Mechael worked as executive director of the mHealth Alliance and as principal and policy lead for HealthEnabled.

Aledade, a tech-enabled accountable care company, has appointed Dr. Paul Kleeberg, previously a HIMSS board member, as its medical director. “With Paul Kleeberg joining as Medical Director, we are bolstering the team that will support the hundreds of new physicians we have added to our ACOs this year,” Aledade CEO Farzad Mostashari said in a statement.

Practice Fusion has laid off 25 percent of its workforce, as reported by TechCrunch. The company told the publication that it let go the employees in an effort to become cash flow positive. TechCrunch added that the company is preparing for an IPO next year.
