PurinaMapMyFitnessMapMyFitness and dog food company Purina have partnered to offer an exercise program for however many of the 20 million MapMyFitness users who have dogs.

The offering includes a social community, activity challenges, new app features and integration between the MapMyFitness app and Purina Pro Plan P5, a dog training app curated with information from Purina Pro Plan trainers.

Purina Pro Plan Fitness Group will be a community site for pet owners to connect to each other, show their pets' activity level, find tips on training and see the virtual "Leader of the Pack". Group members will also be able to access informational content about nutrition, training, and exercise such as how to help keep a dog's muscles strong or which antioxidants protect a dog against free radicals. Another MapMyFitness online community, which launched two months ago in partnership with Brooks Running Company, is now up to 42,000 members.

The MapMyFitness-Purina program also includes a 45-day challenge called Leash On. Once a user signs up for the challenge, all workouts that owners complete with pets, over 15 minutes, will be automatically entered with the aim of completing 30 straight days of working out with a pet. Members with the highest activity level receives recognition on the leader board. The grand prize of the challenge is a year's worth of Purina Pro Plan dog food.

Challenge aside, all MapMyFitness users will now be able to select "Dog Run" as a specific activity type of activity moving forward.

While MapMyFitness runs on iOS, Android, Blackberry and Windows Phone, Purina's P5 app only runs on iOS and Android.
