VA facilities point to wireless EMR opportunity

“The thing that I find so ironic about the whole health- care reform debate is that most of the tactics and strategies that are being talked about as far as how to change the system, all of those things have been in play at the VA for over a decade,” Kenneth Kizer, a former head of the Veterans Health Administration, told Bloomberg during a recent interview.

While doctors who work for the VA don't get paid as much as those in the private sector, the perks include less threat of malpractice lawsuits, no billing woes, and -- reportedly -- electronic records and wireless health tools enable them to practice better medicine but also allow them to work from home sometimes.

The Bloomberg article notes that the VA's Washington D.C.-based care facility makes use of Panasonic Toughbooks, which the physicians and nurses wheel into patients' rooms. One doctor at the facility, Divya Shroff, showed Bloomberg's reporter that with just a few clicks she could call up an interactive electrocardiogram on her BlackBerry, which the doctors called a valuable tool for when a cardiologist located off-site might need to see the image quickly.
