Indonesian digital health company Alodokter has acquired the pregnancy app Diary Bunda from Japanese conglomerate Marubeni Corp. for an undisclosed sum.

Meanwhile, Marubeni also pledged an investment to Alodokter's parent company, Singapore-based Ranelagh, which also operates the doctor platform Alomedika. 

WHY IT MATTERS

Launched in 2020, Diary Bunda provides personalised medical information and content on childbirth and maternal care, seeking to address the growing societal issue of child underdevelopment. It is reported that around 1.5 million babies or about 30% of all children born in Indonesia each year are underdeveloped.

The pregnancy app, according to Alodokter, has "gained significant popularity" among Indonesian mothers in recent years, now having a monthly active user base of 100,000. 

THE LARGER TREND

Alodokter has been pursuing its expansion plans and development of new products on its platform over the past years. It recently received an undisclosed investment from Telkom Group's MDI Ventures and Samsung Ventures for this endeavour.

Alodokter said it aims to enhance the digital healthcare experience of all mothers in Indonesia as it expands its range of healthcare services. 

"We will continue to provide user-friendly and high-quality digital healthcare solutions to the wider community, ensuring that both Alodokter and Diary Bunda app remains a reliable and comprehensive resource for the community of Indonesian mothers," it said in a Linkedin post.
