This morning hybrid primary care provider Crossover Health announced the launch of its new online health and wellbeing community dubbed Be Well.
Users are able to tap into the community to access health-related content and programs. The platform is starting with six core clinical areas, but it's planning on rolling out more than 30 in the long term. Providers at Crossover Health are able to prescribe the resource to their patients.
Once prescribed, members can access a number of resources including free fitness classes and recipes for healthy meals. Patients can also use the tool to read up on topical health issues and manage chronic disease.
WHY IT MATTERS
Crossover Health is pitching this new tool as a way to help patients become more engaged in their health. There has been an increasing focus on social determinants of health, or the factors that impact health outside the four walls of a hospital or clinic. According to the American Action Forum, only about 10 -20% of health outcomes are attributed to medical care. Meanwhile 30% of health outcomes are attributed to genetics, 40-50% to behavior and 20% to social and physical environment.
“From day one, our goal has been to create a place where people embrace the idea of living their healthiest life possible, no matter their current health status. To do that means to transform people’s relationships with their health, and to arm providers with more than prescription pads,” Dr. Scott Shreeve, founder and CEO of Crossover Health, said in a statement. “Be Well is one more resource in our care teams’ toolkit and we hope it encourages members to start a relationship with us before they need care, and to continue to engage with us in the ongoing pursuit of their health goals.”
THE LARGER TREND
Crossover Health was founded in 2010 and offers primary care and other services like mental health resources to health plan and self-insured employer members. The company uses data and analytics to spot high-risk and high-cost patients to help reduce the company’s spend. The provider also offers synchronous and asynchronous virtual care options.
Over the last year Crossover Health has caught the attention of investors. In March, the company scored $168 million in Series D funding.
In July 2020, the company inked a deal with Amazon that will give the retail giant’s employees access to primary care, chronic care, prescription medications, vaccinations, behavioral health services, physical therapy and other health-related services.
