Boston-based Center for Connected Health, a division of Partners Healthcare has launched online health social community Wellocracy.
In 2012, Director Dr. Joseph Kvedar told MobiHealthNews Wellocracy is “a community dedicated to improving the health of regular folks."
On the website, users can read “1-a-Day” and “Fit-it-In” tips, learn from Wellocracy experts about which mobile apps, sleep trackers and activity trackers fit their life habits and take the Wellocracy quiz to see what motivation style works best for the user. The website has also teased some special features coming soon like a project for brides-to-be called “Say ‘Yes’ to the Tracker".
Along with the launch of the website, Wellocracy backed a study of 2,014 US adults, conducted by Harris Interactive, on the use of activity trackers, mobile apps and other tools to monitor health and wellness.
Within that group, 48 percent said it is hard to stay motivated to live a healthy life, and 22 percent were confident they could keep track of their own health.
While 86 percent believe that feeling informed about their own health is empowering, 56 percent have never used any type of health tracking device, app or website. To achieve their health goals, 68 percent agree that encouragement from friends and family is important and 65 percent believe that using a health tracking device, website or app would also be beneficial.
The younger crowd, aged 18 - 34, was more likely to use a diet (23 percent) and fitness (26 percent) app on their mobile devices. Of adults ages 55 and over, 7 percent reported using a diet app and 3 percent have used a fitness app. The group that reported the highest use of "digital activity pedometers" (19 percent) was aged 35-44.
