London-based medical chatbot company Your.MD has raised $10 million in a round led by Orkla Ventures, the venture arm of consumer goods company Orkla. Existing investor Smedvig Capital also participated in the round. Your.MD last raised funds in 2015; this round brings the company's total funding to $17.3 million.

"This invaluable partnership with Orkla enables us to build upon the immense strides we've made over the last two years to offer mobile phone users access to personal and trusted pre-primary care guidance, all across the world," Matteo Berlucchi, Your.MD's CEO, said in a statement. "This investment is going to support the next phase of development of our vision: providing the best health information everyone needs, for free."

Your.MD makes a chatbot that's available on iOS and Android devices as well as messenger platforms Kik, Skype, Slack, Telegram, and Facebook Messenger. Users can explain what their complaints are to the app via voice or text and enter additional symptoms and other personal information, like age or gender. Your.MD will then ask the user up to three follow-up questions to improve the accuracy of the results.

After collecting this data, the app provides the user with information on up to five conditions or illnesses that best match their symptoms and personal profile. Your.MD is also able to sync user data from Apple's HealthKit platform and Samsung’s S Health platform. Users can set up multiple profiles for each of their family members. As the company explains in its FAQ, the chatbot is not meant to replace doctors, but to ease the burden on them.

"Far from displacing doctors, Your.MD has been designed to help ease the existing burdens on medical staff through 'pre-primary care', otherwise known as assisted self-care," the company writes. "Your.MD can assist by digitally screening patients of non-acute conditions, thereby giving doctors more time with patients that would benefit from a consultation. The benefit to you as a Your.MD user is that you receive trustworthy and medically-assured information and suggestions for relieving your symptoms without having to wait for a doctor’s appointment."

The app is free. When MobiHealthNews spoke to Your.MD in 2015, the company said it planned to monetize by adding secondary services. Since then, the company has created OneStop Health, a "curated network of trusted providers" that helps users connect to either doctors or digital solutions like mySugr when their condition is beyond the capabilities of a chatbot. Your.MD works directly with these partners.

One of the goals of the funding round is to expand OneStop Health. The company hopes to have more than 100 services on the platform by the end of 2017 (currently the company's website lists 27 partners). Additionally, funding will be used to continue to build up the capabilitiies of the Your.MD chatbot.
