Asiacell, an Iraqi telecommunications company, announced this week the launch of a mobile health content download and SMS service, according to AMEinfo.com. The new service is part of a larger initiative by Asiacell for spreading health awareness throughout the Iraqi community. According to AMEinfo, Asiacell is "the first and largest private Iraqi telecommunications company and the only mobile telecom company providing coverage for all of Iraq."
The Mobile Health SMS service will offer both prepaid and monthly subscribers information on good health practices, in addition to the latest updates on specific health topics of their choice. Topics include women's health, men's health, children's health, dieting, mental health, and diabetes. The download service will have weekly health updates that cover topics such as sports and fitness, mental health, and emergency medicine.
To subscribe to the daily SMS service, subscribers send an SMS message to a short code, and then text their preferred health topic, which they can choose from a list that will be automatically sent via SMS.
Similar model to the very popular mDhil SMS health services in India.
Abdulla Hassan, Asiacell's Public Relations Unit Head, told AMEinfo that the mobile health service "reflects the Company's interest in keeping abreast with the latest advances in the healthcare sector, and fall under its continuous efforts to raise health awareness amongst members of the Iraqi community, motivating them to adopt healthy lifestyles."
