Sarasota, Florida-based Voalte, which offers a suite of smartphone-based communication tools to nurses and other hospital caregivers, has completed a $17 million from Ascension Ventures, the venture arm of the health system, Cerner Capital, an affiliate of Cerner Corporation, and Bedford Funding.

The first tranche of this round, $10 million, was disclosed in an SEC filing a few months ago. This brings the company's total funding to nearly $60 million.

Voalte’s mobile communication tools help healthcare providers connect with one another when they are inside the hospital, but they can also help connect providers to other members of a patient’s care team outside the hospital. Providers can use Voalte’s suite of tools to make voice calls, text, manage apps, and check if other providers are busy or available.

“The next phase of technology adoption is progressing from individual hospitals to multi-site health systems that need to deploy a system-wide standard for caregiver communication,” Voalte Founder and CEO Trey Lauderdale said in a statement.

In the last quarter, Voalte said the company signed on 44 new sites to use Voalte's communication offerings. The company's offering is used at more than 150 healthcare organizations throughout the US. In April, Voalte announced that Plymouth, Massachusetts-based Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital, replaced its provider communication system with Voalte’s offering. Previously disclosed customers include Texas Children’s Hospital, and Nebraska Medical Center among others.
