Cerner and Nuance Communications have announced a partnership to integrate Nuance's cloud-based voice recognition and dictation software into Cerner's recently released mobile electronic health record solutions.
Officials of the Kansas City-based EMR/EHR vendor say the addition of language processing technology will give clinicians more opportunities to add and edit clinical data at the point of care.
“The expansion of our partnership with Nuance, a company that offers voice and clinical understanding solutions used by 450,000 clinicians worldwide, exemplifies our commitment to provide state-of-the-art solutions to customers across the globe,” said Don Bisbee, senior vice president of DeviceWorks at Cerner, in a press release. “By incorporating Nuance’s voice recognition capabilities into our core clinical applications including our latest mobile solution, PowerChart Touch, we are able to provide the healthcare industry with a simple, fast method of capturing complex medical information within the patient record at the point of care.”
Cerner unveiled its mobile EGR solution, PowerChart Touch, at the HIMSS12 conference this past year in Las Vegas. Part of the company's Millennium+ profile, PowerChart Touch is designed to enable physicians to work on an HER from a mobile device. The integration of Nuance's 360/SpeechAnywhere medical voice recognition technology, officials said, will enable clinicians to dictate data into the record.
In addition, Nuance's PowerScribe 360 radiology reporting suite will be integrated with Cerner's RadNet Radiology Information System (RIS), giving radiologists the opportunity to dictate reports into the patient record in real time.
"For more than 30 years, Cerner has proven its ability to create digital technologies that solve problems and positively impact patient care. Its most recent mobile innovations are a prime example of how these solutions are transforming the EHR experience today, and a key reason why now is the right time to expand our partnership," said Janet Dillione, executive vice president and general manager of Burlington, Mass.-based Nuance Healthcare, in the press release. "Cerner’s solutions are enabling clinicians to experience a fully functional EHR – anytime and anywhere – and voice is playing an important role in making this a reality. We are excited to expand our partnership and confident that intuitive, voice-enabled technologies with deep Cerner integration will spur further industry innovation, improve the clinician experience and help focus efforts on the core mission – providing quality patient care.”
