Pediatric healthcare platform CareDox recently landed $16 million in Series B funding. The round was co-led by AI Life Sciences Investments LLC and 7wire Ventures with additional investments from Digitalis, Prolog Ventures, StartUp Health, and Wanxiang Healthcare Investments.

“CareDox’s mission is to enable the right care at the right time, for every child, and it is a pretty ambitious mission,” Hesky Kutscher, CEO of CareDox, told MobiHealthNews.

To do so, the platform captures students’ medical charts and medications, creates data and immunization analytics, and gives parents and providers alerts about health events. Parents and providers can access this information through mobile or online sources.

"K through 12 schools manage healthcare for more than 50 million kids nationwide, making them the largest healthcare delivery system in this country. Yet, they are highly fragmented and disconnected from traditional care settings. We have a huge opportunity and responsibility to improve pediatric care by digitally connecting the real care team — school nurses, parents, pediatricians — around the child, wherever they are," Kutscher, said in a statement. "We are thrilled that our investor syndicate shares our vision to radically improve pediatric health through technology that better serves and connects students, parents, providers, and payers.”

The New York-based company was rebranded from another product called MotherKnows, which provided an online health records service that let parents see their child’s EHRs on the web or phone. While EHRs are still part of CareDox's services, Kutscher said they are only one component of a robust platform.

This latest financial backing will nearly double the startup's total funding. According to Crunchbase, the company already had $16.5 million in funding prior to this announcement.

This new round will allow the company to expand the services to new states and further develop the product, said Kutscher.

CareDox’s digital health platform is HIPAA- and FERPA-compliant. The platform lets school nurses manage charts and chronic diseases, connect to state immunization registry, approve student health enrollment forms, and let parents know about important health visits.

There is also a parent portal which lets parents and guardians complete district health forms online, view students’ health visit history, and receive end-of-day health visit notifications. The third component to the platform is an admin reporting piece that runs real-time district-wide immunization compliance for state reporting, generates asthma and diabetes reports, and manages chronic disease care for district populations.

The platform is free to school districts because of the company's partnership with Medicaid and other insurance providers. Currently it serves more than 2 million children through its network of more than 4,000 schools and healthcare payers nationwide. The districts range from Seattle to Miami.

Kutscher said in the company is developing a care management product, which will target diabetes and asthma management as well as behavioral management.
