Smart ring maker Oura announces third acquisition in two years

The acquisition of data company Sparta Science will allow Oura to expand its data analytics capabilities and its B2B offerings.

Health-tracking ring maker Oura announced it has agreed to acquire data company Sparta Science, which offers a platform that collects and analyzes health and performance information.

Oura will leverage Sparta Science’s Trinsic data platform to expand its B2B offerings. The company says the acquisition will enhance its Oura Teams platform to serve enterprise, healthcare and government customers. 

Oura Teams is the company's enterprise data management platform that allows administrators to invite their members to share data, manage users, visualize and download data, and review group trends and insights, including anomalies and patterns within group data.  

Oura says the addition of Sparta's Trinsic platform will allow its enterprise partners to combine data from the Oura ring with third-party data sources; provide insights around fitness and safety measures, resource allocation, return-to-work processes and scheduling; and "enable customizable solutions to either integrate with a customer’s existing systems (such as athlete management systems, electronic medical records, and research and operational data platforms) or create customized dashboards and workflows directly."

Several members of Sparta Science's team will join Oura. 

"Our enterprise offering supports organizations of all kinds to solve complex health and human performance challenges at scale, such as optimizing sailors’ schedules for maximum rest and recovery and early detection of illness," Dorothy Kilroy, Oura chief commercial officer, said in a statement 

"Through our work over the years with partners like the Department of Defense, we’ve proved that Oura Ring is uniquely positioned to support population health remotely and at scale. The addition of Sparta Science and its Trinsic data platform will help us meet the specific needs of our partners."

THE LARGER TREND

The wearable-ring company debuted on Kickstarter in 2015. It has since garnered a great deal of funding and acquired several companies. 

In 2021, Oura scored $100 million in a Series C round. A year later, the company announced it reached a valuation of $2.55 billion, but did not release further details on the amount it raised to reach that valuation. 

In 2022, it launched Oura for Business, which provides personalized insights for individuals, while giving leaders customized tools and recommendations based on group data. 

Last month, the Finland-based health-tracking ring maker announced it agreed to acquire fellow Finnish company Veri, which offers personalized metabolic health programs. 

Last year, Oura acquired digital identification startup Proxy through an all-equity deal. Proxy made its digital-identity technology with the intention of replacing keys, cards, badges, apps and passwords.
