SleepNumberBamLabsMattress maker Sleep Number has announced a smart bed, called x12, in partnership with sleep tracker maker Bam Labs. Prices for the bed will start at $7,999.99, according to the company.

Bam Labs' sleep tracker product has formerly only been used in hospital bed systems.

Sleep Number's mattress uses technology called SleepIQ to track and monitor each person's sleep, show what kinds of comfort adjustments each person can make, and suggest changes the user can make to their daily routine. The bed also tracks each person's average breathing rate, movement and average heart rate.

The trackers in the bed connect to an app that will provide each sleeper with a SleepIQ score every night based on the quality of the users' sleep. Over time, these scores will show trends that could help users understand what comfort level and and support setting help them sleep best.

A journal feature within the app also allows users to track routines that might affect sleep quality, such as coffee consumption, exercise and diet. The app will also offers tips: For example, limiting water consumption after 8 pm will lessen nighttime trips to the bathroom.

Another feature in the bed, called FlexFit technology, enables users to change the level of their bed to customize their comfort settings and because the bed offers a dual-air system, they can lessen their partner's snoring by elevating just their partner's side of the bed. The mattress also has different massage settings and under-bed lighting, which can be activated by voice commands.

Last year Bam Labs added a position change feature to their product, which was already in hospital beds. This allowed caregivers to track when patients move around in their beds so that they could keep patients from falling off the bed and make sure patients were turned over regularly. At the time, MobiHealthNews reported facilities using the device and app have seen a 43 percent reduction in falls out of bed and an hour of daily staff time saved per bed.

Sleep Number says the bed will be available in pilot markets in February and will launch nationally in the months following.
