Kaiser PermanenteTwo days after Apple announced a major health tracking partnership with the Mayo Clinic, another big name healthcare provider -- Kaiser Permanente has announced that its flagship app, also called Kaiser Permanente, has now surpassed 1 million downloads.

"We're seeing that members are using the app most often to securely email their doctors and manage appointments," Madhu Nutakki, vice president of digital presence technologies, Kaiser Permanente said in a statement. "Giving members the ability to quickly and easily connect with their doctors and other care providers, no matter where they are, empowers them to become actively engaged in their health care."

Kaiser Permanente members can use the app to email physicians, schedule or cancel appointments, get refills for a prescription, and access lab results. The app will also help users find nearby KP medical facilities.

In July 2013 Kaiser Permanente said the app had more than 600,000 downloads, so it's had around 400,000 downloads since then.

The app first launched for Android devices in January 2012, and by May, the app had 100,000 downloads. That May, Kaiser Permanente also launched an iOS version of the app. At the time Kaiser Permanente Mobility Center of Excellence Executive Director Brian Gardner said that the year before, through the online platform that the healthcare facility had before the app, 29 million lab tests were viewed and 2.5 million appointments were scheduled. He added that the number was likely to go up now that the feature is better enabled for mobile devices.

Kaiser Permanente has four other apps available in the Apple App Store and Google Play store: Every Body Walk! helps users track time spent walking, distance walked, and calories burned. KP Preventive Care for Northern California offers users in that region personalized health reminders and information. KP HRA/HSA/FSA Balance Tracker helps users track their healthcare spending. Finally, My KP Meds, which is also only available for members in northern California, helps users track their medications.

In February, Kaiser Permanente announced that three new Kaiser Permanente hospitals would be opening soon in California and that the company will roll out Journey Home Board, a tablet application that serves as an outpatient education and engagement app. The Journey Home Board is the latest technology to come out of Kaiser’s Imagine Care Anywhere program, an innovation center based out of Kaiser’s Garfield Innovation Center in San Leandro, California.
