Nomad Health, a New York company that makes a platform for job-seekers and employers in the healthcare space, has raised $12 million in a new funding round led by Polaris Partners. Existing investors First Round Capital, RRE Ventures, and .406 Ventures also participated.

“We’re building a marketplace for healthcare jobs,” CEO Dr. Alexi Nazem told MobiHealthNews. “We started out with just freelance doctor jobs, but it’s grown to include travel nursing jobs and telemedicine jobs. … We’re operating in about a dozen states right now and with this funding we’d like to expand into many more states with the ultimate goal of achieving total nationwide coverage. And then, additionally, what we’d like to do with this financing is enhance the feature set.”

Nomad uses digital tools to connect doctors and nurses looking for work to healthcare companies looking to hire them — filling the role that is traditionally handled by a staffing agency.

“The whole point here is to really not have a third party involved,” Nazem said. “We want the technology to enable the two sides of this deal, a doctor and a hospital, to directly work with each other. To do all the negotiating and contracting directly, using the technology as a supporting tool. We don’t want to be involved in the middle because we recognize and the whole thesis of the business is that the third party is causing friction, is causing cost, is causing frustration. So what we want to do is give both sides super powers, and technology is all about giving super powers.”

Nazem said the two main priorities of the funding are to hire additional sales staff to get Nomad into more states and two add additional features, including improvements to the credentialing process, auto-scheduling of candidate screening, and support on the platform for video interviews.

According to Nazem, Nomad has a medium-term and a long-term goal. The medium-term goal is to expand the number of types of providers and facilities that can use the service.

“Today we serve doctors and nurses just for short-term jobs,” he said. “Where we want to be in the future and where we’re going is a platform where any healthcare organization can hire doctors, nurses, and all kinds of healthcare professionals for all kinds of jobs: short-term jobs, long-term jobs, part-time jobs, full-time jobs, on-site jobs, virtual jobs. What that does is it makes Nomad the only place a doctor or nurse needs to go to find a job and the only place that a healthcare organization needs to go to find all the people that they need to hire.”

Down the road, the company also plans to add additional functionality to the platform beyond facilitating the hiring process.

“The long-term goal is to really become a workforce-management platform [for employers], and the flipside of that is being a career-management platform [for job-seekers],” he said. “So not just recruiting them but onboarding them and continuing to manage them. Continuing medical education, ongoing licensing, all that kind of stuff. None of that is well-managed today. It is very, very complex, it is very fragmented, and it is barely serviced by any technology. So we want to be the company that brings that all together in one platform.”
