According to various news reports from Washington, President Obama is mulling whether to appoint Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius as secretary of the health and human services (HHS) department. The governor's office declined to comment on the speculative reports: "Governor Sebelius remains focused on the economic challenges currently facing Kansas, including our state budget and the impacts of the federal stimulus package," said Sebelius' spokeswoman, Beth Martino.
If true, Sebelius would be the president's runner-up for HHS secretary. Obama's first pick was ex-Senate Democratic leader Tom Daschle, who bowed out after news that he never paid $128,000 in taxes for a car and driver provided to him for free by a wealthy Democratic fundraiser.
Sebelius previously served as as Kansas's insurance commissioner for eight years. Since Kansas elected her governor, Sebelius has worked to provide universal health insurance to Kansas children younger than five.
