AI-enabled real-world evidence platform Century Health and neurology-based medical practice Nira Medical announced a partnership to curate data from more than 3,000 patients with multiple sclerosis.

Multiple sclerosis is a chronic neurological disease in which the patient's immune system attacks their central nervous system, causing scars around the myelin of the nerves.

Dependent on data from Nira Medical’s network of clinics, Century Health’s AI platform will create structured datasets that will be analyzed in partnership with life sciences companies to accelerate research into MS treatment and improve patient outcomes.

Century Health's HIPAA-compliant and SOC 2-certified AI platform will curate and enrich both retrospective and prospective EHR data.

By leveraging the curated datasets, Nira will have the capability to develop insights into the critical elements of treating MS patients, including disease subtype, treatment history, disease progression and relapse rate.

The partnership will begin in multiple sclerosis because of the large patient population in Nira Medical’s network, together with the large number of therapies that are available for analysis.

Meanwhile, the aim is to utilize the longitudinal dataset to enable life sciences companies to answer novel research questions, accelerate drug development and increase access to new treatments.

"Our vision is to revolutionize how clinical data powers innovation in healthcare," Vish Srivastava, cofounder and CEO of Century Health, told MobiHealthNews

"We’ve only begun to scratch the surface of the vast, siloed data that can unlock life-changing research and therapies. By partnering with forward-thinking providers and harnessing advanced AI to process data at scale, Century Health is creating win-wins that ultimately benefit millions of patients."

"Neurology is a complex field, and neurologists' documentation of patient encounters is often filled with rich descriptive information that doesn’t lend itself to the structured checkboxes and lists found in most electronic health record templates," Dr. John Foley, medical director of clinical affairs at Nira Medical, told MobiHealthNews.

"Artificial intelligence and machine learning are the tools needed to extract meaningful data from the neurology record, data that accurately represent the patient's history, treatment plan and response to therapeutic intervention. When these tools are applied precisely, we will be able to truly follow the neurology patient journey and aggregate data in the most insightful manner to better improve patient care."

THE LARGER TREND

In 2024, Century Health launched with $2 million in pre-seed funding. 2048 Ventures led the round with participation from LifeX, Everywhere, Alumni Ventures and angel investors, including Datavant founder Travis May and Evidation founder and CEO Christine Lemke.

According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), 2.8 million people worldwide are estimated to have MS.

Data from the NIH shows MS prevalence has increased globally since 2013; however, gaps in prevalence estimates persist. The pooled incidence rate across 75 reporting countries is 2.1 per 100,000 persons per year, and the mean age of diagnosis is 32 years. Females are twice as likely to live with MS than males.
