Validic, a digital health and personalized care technology company, announced the integration of physical activity data from wearables and smartwatches into electronic health record (EHR) clinical workflows.

The multi-device platform, accessible in Epic and Oracle Health EHR systems, adds daily insights from more than 350 wearable device models from leading consumer brands, such as Apple, Fitbit, Garmin, Google, Oura, Samsung and Withings to the patient clinical record.

Key features include up-to-date patient health data from more than 350 wearable devices; automatic data capture and display in Epic and Oracle Health EHR patient charts; provider-facing workflow views of steps, active minutes and calories burned, in a structured format, irrespective of the manufacturer or device; and attainable to all care team members who have access to the patient’s chart.

"Connecting physical activity data directly into EHR workflows gives clinicians a more complete picture of a patient’s health, enhancing patient conversations and behavior change recommendations," Drew Schiller, CEO of Validic, said in a statement.

"This integration eliminates the barriers of accessing disparate systems and enables personalized, data-driven care at scale. By meeting patients where they are, providers can inspire greater engagement and long-term health improvements."

Amy McDonough, managing director of strategic health solutions at Google, said wearables are part of people’s daily lives and offer a window into their health behaviors and habits.

"This integration ensures that clinicians have the insights they need to guide patients on their wellness journey, while consumers gain a deeper understanding of how their activity influences their health," McDonough said in a statement.

THE LARGER TREND

In January, Circular announced its next-generation wearable, the Ring 2, which includes ECG capability with its FDA-cleared AFib detection algorithm that provides real-time heart health data to wearers.

That same month, VIV Health unveiled its new wearable, the VIV Ring, which includes generative sleep-aid sound technology that analyzes biometric data, sleep patterns and sleep cycles. The ring also "prioritizes" natural sounds, including recordings of deep-sea acoustics, rainfall in forests, ocean waves and bird songs, combined with monaural and binaural sounds.

In 2024, Samsung announced its AI-powered offerings, including the new Galaxy Ring, designed to collect wearers' health data 24/7 and the Galaxy Watch Ultra with new BioActive Sensors.

The company also announced its Galaxy AI-powered Energy Score via Samsung Health, which provides personalized insight into the body's functions and whether individuals should "take it easy" or "push their limits" by analyzing their sleep metrics and heart rate variability.

In 2022, Validic raised $12 million in a funding round. The round was led by Kaiser Permanente Ventures, with participation from existing and new investors, Ziegler, Arkin Digital Health, SJF Ventures, Green Park & Golf Ventures, Greycroft Partners and Gore Range Capital.
